Cat Comes Back From The Dead

Church.

I’m not talking about the place of worship. No, friends, I’m talking about the scariest of all creatures. Specifically the cat in Stephen King’s Pet Semetary.

You may remember him as the cat that was run over by a truck in the story, buried and then summoned back to life. Once back among the ‘living’ he was anything but a normal, annoying cat.

There was something wrong, something sinister about him. It’s as if he were dead, but alive. Strange indeed, but then again he was a cat, so who could really tell?

Thank goodness this was just a story made up in the mind of Mr. King. Bringing a cat back to life; the man’s mind is truly sinister! Surely something like this couldn’t happen in the real world.

Or could it?

The Manchester Evening News has the disturbing story.

A cat has come back from the dead – NINE months after his owners buried their cherished pet.

Angelo Petrillo and wife Katy were devastated when ginger tom Alfie went missing last June.

Two weeks later, a neighbour told them Alfie had been spotted dead by the side of the slip road near junction 21 of the M62.

Angelo, 39, recognised the cat as his own and buried it in land near the family home in
Milnrow, Rochdale.

The couple, who have another cat, Freddie, moved to a house about a mile away in November.

But this week they were stunned to receive a text message from the family who moved into their old home saying a ginger tom cat was going ‘berserk’ outside and trying to get in. They said it couldn’t be their cat as Freddie was asleep and they had buried Alfie.

But the next day they had three more calls from former neighbours saying the cat was meowing all night and asking if it belonged to them. Katy, 35, a manager for a wine company, drove to the house to reassure them that it was definitely not their cat. But when she arrived, she was stunned to see Alfie.

Angelo, an energy company worker, said: “It was just unbelievable – the cat I had buried nine months earlier, the cat we spent about a month grieving over was back and my wife just couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

“I was 100 per cent certain the cat I had buried was Alfie – he had the same markings, was the same size and everything about him matched, so when my wife walked through the door with Alfie I was totally stunned – it was like he had risen from the dead.”

The couple do not know where Alfie has been living since the summer but their vet told them he probably got lost and by the time he eventually found his way home, the family had moved.

Angelo added: “It is just one in a million – we even marked ‘Alfie’s’ grave so it’s amazing he’s back.

“He’s doing really well and recovering from his ordeal.”

Dog Rescued From Can of Cat Food

You ever get so hungry you’d eat cat poop?

I know I have, but sometimes the litter box is empty forcing me to scrounge around the house looking for alternatives.

I’ll check under the couch cushions (the old man is a slob and lots of food gets stuck there, along with a lot of change), on top of short tables and even go so far as to check the bathroom floor.

Of course my personal favorite thing to do when I’m at starvation death’s door is to go the way of the garbage pail. I knock it over, spread around the goodies and feast on rotting, leftover human food. Mmmm, tasty.

I read this morning of a very young pup who’s well on his way of following me in my paw prints. It made me proud to read the North West Evening Mail tell the story.

Irene Thompson woke at 7.30am on Tuesday to find her kitchen had been ransacked by her German Shepherd, Tia.

She then discovered one of her three-week-old ‘German Shepusky’ puppies – cross-bred husky and German Shepherd puppies – in distress.

A crew from Barrow fire station had to cut the unnamed pup free after it got stuck in an empty tin of Mrs Thompson’s cat Spice’s food.

Mrs Thompson, of Dalton Road, Askam, said: “I got up and it was devastation in my kitchen.

“The mother had eaten a bag of dog biscuits.

“I looked down and this little puppy had her head stuck in a tin, just a normal-sized tin of Whiskas cat food.

“I tried pulling it off but she started making these little noises.

“I had to puncture a hole in the tin so she could breathe.”

Mrs Thompson then called a friend, who rang the fire brigade to see if they could help.

Minutes later, a fire officer from Barrow’s white watch had arrived at Mrs Thompson’s house.

She said: “A fire chief came in his car and said a fire engine would be there soon.

“A full crew were there.

“They cut the rim of the tin and then pulled it back.

“I would never have been able to do that myself because I have arthritis.

“She [the puppy] was very brave throughout it.

“I can’t thank them [the firefighters] enough.”

The tough mutt escaped her ordeal unharmed.

The pup, who gained the nickname Whiskas from the incident, is part of a litter of 11.

Don’t judge…this could just as easily have happened to a cat or more likely, a pygmy goat.

Dog Painting Gone Bad

I’m an artist.

I dabble in an impressionist style, but rather than using vibrant colors, I enjoy the use of an earth tone pallete instead. You could say I favor the color brown above all.

Sometimes my canvas is filled with heavy, oil painting type strokes. Other times it’s like a light watercolor coating. Regardless, the end result is a masterpiece worthy of the Louvre.

Inexplicably, my mother is not a fan of my painting. The subject matter is highly entertaining ranging from stick figures, to bigger stick figures to paw prints. Doesn’t matter, she hates my work.

That’s probably because my canvas is the floor, the carpet or the bed; and my paints are the Georgia red clay, thunderstorm puddles and best of all, the family poo from the back yard.

I am misunderstood. Alas, such is the life of an artist.

But hey, at least I don’t live in China. Check out this story of dog painting gone bad in the world’s most populous country.

The painted dogs in question were on display in Zhengzhou, in eastern China’s Henan Province, at what appears to have been a veritable festival of dog painting.

As well as the tiger-dog, there were a number of rather adorable fluffy panda-dogs being shown to the crowd.

Panda-dogs will be familiar to the long-term readers of this site, as one of their kind has featured before. We’ve also covered the extreme transformations that take place in America, in which dogs are not merely transformed into turtles, but into mutant ninja turtles.

Exactly why people are so keen on the trans-species decoration of their dogs is not especially clear, but the effort is appreciated. Except, perhaps, by the dogs.

Duck Out of Water

I heart all baked goods.

During Christmas I always enjoy my mother’s demented, serial killing gingerbread men, her leaning tower of Pisa pound cake, and most of all the sugar cookies she buys from the Publix bakery.

Overall, I’d say my favorites are peanut butter cookies, liver flavored cupcakes and bone marrow muffins. MMM, mmm, good.

Of course my cullinary exploration must stop at the border of Chocolate City. Many a pup has ventured in, but not one has come out.

Maybe that’s where the myth of the Great Brownie comes from. That most elusive moist, succulent dough forever infused with pecans and deep, dark chocolate that every dog is instinctively drawn to. Maybe.

Or maybe it’s just a segway into a story about a daffy duck named Brownie who got himself into a little bit of trouble. The Telegraph has the story.

Brownie, a four month-old Aylesbury cross khaki-Campbell, was found wedged in the overflow tube at her home in Chalford Hill, near Stroud, Gloucestershire.

Chris and Karen Hutchens dialled the county fire service’s out-of-hours number on Saturday morning after their daughter Ellen, 13, begged them to get Brownie out.

”It was such a relief when a fire engine turned up and they started digging the hole, the pipe was about 4ft underground but they kept going, they were wonderful and really went beyond the call of duty.

”Brownie is so much a part of our family and so it is amazing that she made it, I really didn’t think we would get her out.”

The family first grew concerned on Friday when Brownie didn’t come up from the pond with their five other ducks.

They first thought she had been eaten by a fox, until a friend clearing the pond heard a quack from the bottom of the overflow pipe.

A fire service spokeswoman confirmed that the crew arrived just before 9.30am and had rescued the duck unharmed by 3.40pm.

The team dug a trench to reach the pipe and get the duck out.

I give credit to these fine firemen. Sure it took six hours to rescue the duck but in the end they managed to get a brownie a dog could finally eat, and live to tell about.

Cat Thinks It’s a Chick

I’m not sure what I want to become when I grow up.

Yeah I know time is running out, with me being 17 and all, but once you give up on your dream there’s not much left.

So here’s a partial list of what I’d like to become:

1) Firehouse dog

2) A father
3) First dog to catch the Chuck Wagon
4) Head of household on the family’s tax return

To some my goals may seem unachievable but as I like to think, if you aren’t stretching, you’re shrinking.

Yet to others my goals appear modest. To those folks I challenge you to compare them to a cat living his ‘dream’ in Australia. The NT News has her sto ry.

FOUR legs, two pointy ears, whiskers on his face – Bustopher might look like one, but he is far from being an ordinary cat.

The four-year-old feline thinks he’s a chook.

When Naomi Oliver’s chickens laid their eggs and didn’t show much interest in the incubation and the upbringing of their offspring, the animal-lover’s feline took over the command in the chook shed – and started incubating the eggs.

“I am not sure if he knows that he is a cat, he doesn’t really behave like one,” Mrs Oliver told the Northern Territory News.

“Bustopher often wanders around in the chook pen, playing with the chooks as if he was one of them, not a predator.”

But it wasn’t until her chooks laid a few eggs in a nest outside their shed that Mrs Oliver discovered her cat’s quirky affection for her poultry.

“I was looking for Bustopher and found him sitting on the eggs, obviously trying to incubate them,” Mrs Oliver said.

“When he was still there after three days I started wondering what was going through his head – but I am sure he thought he was doing a great job.”

Mrs Oliver said her cat only left his nest once or twice a day to grab a feed and have a nap on her bed, before heading back to his hatchlings-to-be.

If you ask me, that’s some serious prep time for a meal. I’ll stick to human treats and watching Iron Chef.

A Bright Idea

My mother is a candle freak.

No, I mean it. She lights candles in every room of the house, presumably for the smell. She must be heavily invested in Yankee Candle stock.

One thing’s for sure, she doesn’t light them to get my old man in a romantic mood. Heck, to him a night of romance is eating a rack of bbq ribs, watching Dumb and Dumber, and farting under the covers.

His repertoire lacks lit candles. You’ll find nothing flickering in the bedroom, or around the bath tub, or in between my bowl of water and kibble. I guess it’s just not in his DNA to create a loving mood.

I’ll tell you this, if my mother ever wants to get me in the right mood, she just has to light a candle like the one in this MyFox Atlanta story.

White Castle, which markets itself as America’s first burger chain, sold out of its slider-scented charity candles online just two days after posting them, it emerged Friday.

The cult-favorite fast food joint still had some of its “steam-grilled-on-a-bed-of-onions-scented candles” available in-store, but supplies of the beefy delights are going fast. The candle features the chain’s logo and is designed to resemble the signature cardboard sleeve of White Castle’s burgers.

“It’s the ultimate gift for Castle lovers everywhere,” Jamie Richardson, vice president of corporate relations, said of the $10 candles.

“White Castle fans from around the country have responded so enthusiastically that our online inventory sold out in record time. Best of all, net proceeds from all candle sales will be donated to Autism Speaks.”

White Castle teamed up with the “queen of home fragrances” Laura Slatkin, founder of Nest Fragrances, to develop the candle. Slatkin sits on the board of Autism Speaks.

“When I think of truly superior aromas, I think of the aroma of a freshly-grilled White Castle hamburger — life just doesn’t get better than that,” Slatkin said. “We have captured that exact essence in our White Castle candle.”

Jackass Runs For Mayor

The world of politics is filled with jackasses.

That’s the only way to make sense of what’s going on in the world today.

I’m not going to get into my personal beliefs on how to cure the world’s ills, just know that I have a plan, and that plan would save the world from itself.

Why not share it? Well, I’m too tired to spread the word.

So, for now, I’ll sit back and watch the world continue down its ruinous path. I can only hope that a few rays of sunshine turn into a sunny day and all will be well with the world again.

One such ray shone through the clouds this morning as I scoured the internet for signs of hope. It’s the story of Marko the Donkey and his political aspirations.

A donkey has been submitted as a candidate for the upcoming elections for a new mayor of Bulgarian town Varna.

Marko the donkey has been chosen by the Society for New Bulgaria political party to represent them for the elections on October 23.

It was reported that the party see Marko as the ideal alternative to the current mayor Kiril Yordanov, who they feel is not doing a good enough job for the town.

Angel Dyankov, head of the campaign headquarters of the Society for New Bulgaria party, said: ‘Unlike the other mayor candidates and politicians, the Donkey has a strong character, doesn’t steal, doesn’t lie, and gets work done.’

Fellow Society for New Bulgaria member Doychin Dimitrovmade made his point clear about his dissatisfaction with the current mayor of Varna.

‘Marko’s life is difficult because the green areas in the Bulgarian sea capital are disappearing.

‘Let the residents of Varna draw the line and decide who has more positive qualities – the donkey or the incumbent Mayor.’

Do what you can to get out the vote for this impressive candidate, for surely he has better ideas than the current political class.

Gelding Forced to Adopt Ducks

As I wrote in my book, Bad to the Bone: Memoir of a Rebel Doggie Blogger, you don’t have much of a choice as to who adopts you.

Even a fun loving, outgoing and lovable mutt like me had to have a couple of goes at it before landing my forever folks, but I was lucky.

Imagine being a duck and being adopted by a horse. That’s right, an equine.

That got me to thinking, what if that was me in that situation? How much fun could cuddle time be if I’m worried about my safety? Let’s be honest, once Mama Secretariat rolls over, I’m dead.

What about primping time before heading out to talk up the local chihuahuas? Well, I’ve never seen a hoof that can hold a furminator, or be able to spray a healthy dose of Old Spice on my neck.

How about a smooth stroke of my fur? I’d be afraid the leg coming my way was a kick to the head.

On the upside, I guess a horse could teach me how to kick field goals, or better yet, the ability to poop anywhere without repercussions.

Champion horse Topper took the ducklings under his wing – well, hoof – after allowing their mother, Lola, to lay a dozen eggs in his stable.

He kept watch over them for a month before they hatched and then scared away foxes and dogs that got too close.

‘Far from being upset, Topper really likes his little duck family,’ said Kim Stevens, yard manager at the stables in Milland, West Sussex.

‘He was in and out of the stable all the time but every time he came back in, the first thing he did was look around to make sure they were still there.’

It is thought Lola moved in with Topper after her last lot of eggs were eaten by a fox. Before the new batch hatched, staff moved them to a safe corner of the straw so Topper, who was recently ridden to victory at the British Open Indoor Cross Country, did not accidentally squash them.

Snake Can’t Kick Cigarette Habit

Sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. It’s a sure path to ruin.

I don’t partake in any of it. Heck, I won’t even consider the gateway activity to getting there. You know, smoking.

Sure I get peer pressure to take a toke on a Virginia Slim or a Marlboro Light, but no matter how much Ruger the boxer insists, I just won’t inhale.

The reason is simple. If I’m going to inhale something that isn’t healthy, it’s going to be a Whopper from BK, or dare I say it, a Big Mac from McDees. Yeah life expectancy is cut short by six months for each one you eat, but at least your enjoying the taste.

I say, if you like smoke then just dress up like a Dalmatian and work for the local fire department. Not only will you have plenty of smoke to smell, but you get free truck rides. Wheee!

Anyway, my advice is to no avail for one slimy character. The Metro has the story of Po, a snake slithering down the wrong trail.

You don’t want to deny Po the pit viper his regular morning cigarette – he’s guaranteed to throw a hissy fit.

That’s because the three-year-old reptile from Taipei in Taiwan has become hooked on nicotine, thanks to his owner Sho Lau’s 20-a-day habit.

‘He is very tame and one day when I threw a cigarette butt away he went for it and seemed to enjoy having it in his mouth,’ said 33-year-old Lau.

‘One thing led to another and before long he was having one cigarette in the morning and another at night.’

‘He gets very agitated if I don’t have any to spare,’ he added.

Sho Lau failed to mention that Po’s hisses now sound like Lurch from the Adams Family.

Superdog Flies Over NY

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have super powers? You know, the ability to do something really special.

A dog’s well documented skill set includes super smelling senses, super gulping power and super poo that heals the young. But what if that’s not enough for us, if we want to be better than that?

I know what I’d want. I would add to my repertoire x-ray vision, if only to see under the flirtatious Shaggy Dog’s coat that prances around my neighborhood. I know that sounds wrong, and it probably is, but I tell it like it is.

What if you want to see what’s happening in the other room but your creaking bones keep you from getting up? Zaaapp…use the x-ray vision.

Want to see what’s in the fridge? Zaaap…use the x-ray vision and see if the date on the bacon is indeed from the last century. Ahh, so many practical uses!

Well, a terrier in New York has decided on a different specialty. Flying. The Tribeca Trib has his story.

“I call him my miracle dog,” Sarann Lindenauer said as she held her 4-year-old terrier Alfie, careful not to put pressure on his bruised chest and bandaged leg. “I’m just so thrilled he’s okay.”

A miracle indeed. Just a few bruises, a sore paw and a cut lip were all that Alfie suffered recently when a heavy wind apparently blew the dog off of Lindenauer’s 11th floor terrace in Tribeca’s Independence Plaza and onto the roof of a townhouse in the complex, five stories below and some 30 feet to the east.

Lindenauer said Alfie usually avoids the terrace and only goes onto it briefly when it’s thundering or otherwise noisy outside. “Then he’ll bark and run back in,” she said. “I’m thinking that wind just took him because he doesn’t jump.”

Had the wind not whipped Alfie towards the townhouse, he would have landed on the concrete plaza, three stories farther down.

Lindenauer said she knew something was amiss when she returned from grocery shopping on the stormy afternoon of May 3 and Alfie did not run to the door.

“I was walking around calling ‘Alfie, Alfie, Alfie.’ I looked under the bed, but he never hides.”

Her terrace at 80 North Moore Street overlooks an elevated plaza. Stepping to the terrace wall, she recalled the terrible sight of a dog thrown from the building to its death during a rage of domestic violence years ago. Now she feared that Alfie would be there.

“I didn’t want to see him but I looked,” she recalled.

What Lindenauer did not know was that her dog was already in the lobby of the building, bruised, slightly bleeding and soaking wet but otherwise just fine. A neighbor on the 7th floor, Jessica Gould, had rescued him from the roof where he had landed.

“I looked out of my window and I see this little dog running up and down the roof in the pouring rain and I started to panic,” Gould recalled. “I was terrified the dog was going to jump off the roof because he looked so panicked. He looked really desperate.”

After first calling building security, Gould discovered a door that led directly to the townhouse roof. She grabbed Alfie and took him downstairs where the doorman, Ron Russo, wrapped him in a blanket.

Learning that her dog was in the lobby, the relieved owner went downstairs to retrieve him.

“I was looking at him and there was no recognition on his part,” she said. “I think he was in shock.”

A vet determined that Alfie had no broken bones. Bruises on a leg and underside indicated that he probably landed on his stomach.

“At the vet, they called him Alfie the Aviator,” Lindenauer laughed.

Nor has the owner completely recovered. “I’m still in shock,” she said. “I can’t believe it happened.”

The Wright Brothers’ two dogs, Wing and Prayer, couldn’t be prouder.
